Guide to acids used in skin care

The Sothys products we use here in the salon are developed after years of scientific research, and utilise a number of active ingredients to provide optimal benefits for the skin. A variety of acids are used to target specific skin concerns and conditions, so here is a quick summary of the top ingredients used :

Hyaluronic Acid – to hydrate and smooth wrinkles

Great for moisturising and penetrating deep into the layers of the skin, leaving a plump and dewy feel, as well as targeting wrinkles and fine lines. As it’s a naturally occurring acid in humans already (which decreases as you age), hyaluronic acid is easily absorbed by the skin by pulling moisture from the air and penetrating into the skin cells, and is often used in conjunction with vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

We recommended: Sothys Hydra 3HA Facial ($160 – 60 minutes), Hydra 3HA Hydrating serum, cream or gel-cream

Salicylic Acid (Beta-hydroxy acid) – the blemish buster

Perfect for oily and acne prone skin, Salicylic acid combats pesky blemishes by dissolving the debris and dead skin that clogs pores.  It penetrates oil-laden hair follicle openings, and apart from helping with acne, can also help improve the texture and colour of sun-damaged skin.  Great for people with sallow skin or those with hyper-pigmentation tendencies (patches of darker skin).

We recommended: Salicylic Peel ($90 – 30 mins)

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – the surface smoother

Glycolic and lactic acid are both AHAs  and work to provide deep exfoliation of the skin, while working to regenerate the skin’s collagen production. These products can help shrink enlarged pores, even the skin’s texture, smooth fine lines, and brighten sun spots. The skin is more sensitive to sun after application of AHAs, so wearing sun screen is recommended.

We recommended: Glysalic Peel ($90 – 30 mins) or Lactic Acid Peel ($90 – 30 mins)

Retinol – for even skin tone

Retinol is derived from vitamin A and is found in many over-the-counter anti-aging skin care products. Skin responds to retinol because vitamin A has a molecular structure that’s tiny enough to get into the lower layers of skin, where it finds collagen and elastin. Retinol is proven to improve mottled pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, skin tone and color, and your skin’s hydration levels.

We recommended: Sothys Retinal Dermobooster alongside your regular night cream

Copper Peptides – the firming and anti-ageing hero

Copper peptide is often referred to as the most effective skin regeneration product, even though it’s only been on the market since 1997. Studies have shown that copper peptide promotes collagen and elastin production, acts as an antioxidant, and promotes production of natural hyaluronic acid. Studies have also shown that copper-dependent enzymes increase the benefits of the body’s natural tissue-building processes. The substance helps to firm, smooth, and soften skin, doing it in less time than most other anti-aging skin care products. Clinical studies have found that copper peptides also remove damaged collagen and elastin from the skin and scar tissue because they activate the skin’s system responsible for those functions.

We recommended: Anti Ageing Treatment ($175 – 75 mins), Sothys Firming Youth Serum + Cream
